Summer Reading Challenge

Dear Honeywell School staff and students

Wandsworth Libraries is delighted to announce the 2021 Summer Reading Challenge: Wild World Heroes, launching 10 July. This year, in partnership with The Reading Agency and the World Wildlife Fund, we’re celebrating the environment, ecoheroes, and—of course—reading! This year, we are hopeful the Challenge can be run in libraries, but we will adjust our plans and keep you updated accordingly if the situation changes.

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?

The Reading Agency’s nation-wide Summer Reading Challenge has been running in partnership with British public libraries since 1999. It is the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion to children ages 4-11. Wandsworth has consistently boasted some of the highest participation in the borough. Let’s get even more kids reading this summer!

How do schools benefit?

The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that pupils develop the habit of reading widely and often for both pleasure and information. Unfortunately, these hard-won habits can slip over school holidays. The Summer Reading challenge encourages reading for pleasure with easy access to a wide variety of books, free fun and creative activities, a friendly competitive spirit, and prizes!

Fun for all ages!

Though the main Summer Reading Challenge is for ages 4-11, we also run a Mini Reading Challenge for children under 4 and a Challenge Plus for ages 11-17. We will also be running online and/or in-branch events for all ages if restrictions allow.

What’s next?

If able, we’ll schedule a time to talk to students about the Summer Reading Challenge, or send you resources for promoting the Challenge to your school. You can also download a school resource pack on the Reading Agency website (readingagency.co.uk/schools). By championing the Summer Reading Challenge your school will be continuing your support of pupils’ learning during the holiday, ensuring they return in September ready for a great start to the new academic year!
